Virgil Abloh was named the new Menswear Designer for Louis Vuitton in March of 2018. This historic appointment was followed by a stunning show, where Virgil shocked the world with his streetwear take on the house of Vuitton. Virgil is the first black designer to ever enter to Louis Vuitton house, and he is now in the ranking for the most influential designer in the world, alongside Anthony Vaccarello, Alexander Wang, Olivier Rousting, and Chris Van Ash.
What made Virgil's collections stand out from the previous seasons were his bold printed logo ensembles, and his usage of mesh tops and metallic jackets. The chains that he added to the traditional Louis Vuitton bag were also a major change to the super classic look. Also different was the color selection. He debuted neon yellows and greens, as well as bold blues and oranges.
The most fascinating thing about this show was the front row- featuring Rihanna, Jordyn Woods, Kanye West, and ASAP Rocky, and the Kardashian family. This is not a crowd you would normally see at a Louis Vuitton show, but it further hints at the major changes the brand will be undergoing.
It is safe to say the Virgil came in with a bang, but was that bang a success? Several critiques claim that he has destroyed the brand and is tarnishing it's reputation. Others suggest that this is a much needed change and are excited for more. Where ever one may stand on the argument, one cannot doubt that Virgil's time at Vuitton will be memorable and change how we see one of the most iconic brands in fashion.
